This now out of print international set, sold through mail order was Published from 1968 through the 70s by Time Life in the U.S.
The Foods of the World series, 54 (27 2 book sets of Regional Culture and Cuisines. Each set with one large pictorial hardback with a matching Spiral Soft Back full of recipes for use in the kitchen).
The series represents Culture and Cuisines of 27 parts of the world from the Americas to China, France, Japan, India to the Caribbean Islands, Africa to spain and more.
The series was overseen by food writer Michael Field. Text and Recipe contributions were by Great food writers; Craig Claiborne, Pierre Franey, James Beard, M.F.K. Fisher, Dale Brown, Laurens Van Der Post, Peter S. Feibleman, Linda Wolfe, Jonathan Norton Leonard, Santha Rama Rau, Rafael Steinberg, Harry G. Nickles, Helen and George Papashvily plus many others. Michael Field and Fransis Field authured the Quintet of Cuisines; andMichael Field died before the series was complete.
We have found four bindings for this series, all printed on premium paper inside.
Most of the series has been published with pictorial paper wrapped hardbacks and a matching pictorial softback Spiral. With time, the hardbacks yellowed, print on the spines faded making it hard to read the spine titles and With storage, the books tended to stick to each other, removing some of the ink, causing white spots on the covers.
A publishing of the series, came in a heavy cloth covered binder for each Regional two book set. Each binder has a heavy cloth covered hardback with a gold title embossed on front board and spine with a pictorial softback Spiral recipe book. The binders do not hold up well and many times the softback Spiral is stress damaged from the way it is held in the binder. The heavy cloth hardbacks, if you could find all 27 would make a beautiful display set.
a special Series was published with a slip cover for each 2 book set. Rumor is this was for sale in book stores, now hard to find in a complete set. The slip cases make the complete series very large, taking up a lot of shelf space, they are great for those who only want one or a few Regional Sets.
Also a premium series of the hardbacks, with all cloth pictorial boards and reenforced bindings, for Schools and librarys was published by Silver Burdett. These reinforced all cloth bindings hold up very well, but, copies many times have markings from the School or library, crushing their value to collectors. the books state Publisher as : School and library distribution by Silver Burdett.
This is a great set for display, if you can find all 27 hardbacks without markings.
Books in this series that were printed from 1972 on, have ISBN numbers, so, you may find an early printing without an ISBN number.
The last sets in the series were the eight American. With the series by mail order , people did not allways complete their series, making the later sets in the series printed less and harder to find.
